Remodel and addition for a 1923 arts & crafts home in a challenging landmark zone- the historic Mapleton Hill District. The original home consisted of a rustic basement, main floor, and uninhabitable attic. tres birds workshop made it so that all three floors are usable and connect visually with light. Vertical connection comes with large stair openings, light enters from the third floor down to basement. Horizontal connection comes from an addition to the back of the house, each floor extending to the outdoors: stream, wildlife corridor, and foothills. The entire remodel structure was built from reclaimed Douglas Fur beams that were previously part of a downtown Boulder building. A large, glass garage door in the basement playroom opens to more playing in the yard. Visual connection and experience with the land is constant.
