BIRD HOUSES AT S*PARK
Provided: Design + Build
Location: Denver, CO
Completed: Spring 2018

In the middle of S*Park, the mixed-use living and urban agriculture development nestled between Denver’s historic Curtis Park neighborhood and the vibrant RiNo art district, lies nearly 20,000 square feet of green space. The gardens were an essential element to the development, allowing for humans to connect with nature in an increasingly dense urban environment. “Being able to work in your garden after work, participating with nature, it’s like magic — the best stress reliever,” says tbw founder and principal Mike Moore.

Walking through the S*PARK gardens, brightly colored birdhouses dot the gardens and pathways that weave throughout. With reserved funds for an art installation, bird houses became the answer to creating a symbiotic relationship between the art and the park.

14 custom birdhouses were designed and built in the Tres Birds Denver workshop. “We wanted to learn about the patterns and needs of the local birds. What types of birds are native to this land? What kind of homes did they build themselves? How could we encourage them to live among the residents at S*Park?” continues Moore. Each with different shapes, entry sizes, colors, and facing unique directions, the houses welcome chickadees, finches, sparrows, and many others to the gardens.

In reverence for the historic Curtis Park neighborhood, five bird houses were designed and built as exact replicas of classic homes constructed from the 1880s to the 1930s in the Italianate and Queen Anne styles. Their paint and decor match the local classics, a nod to the historic neighborhood they now sit in.

The bird houses and their inhabitants are a teaser for what’s to come at the S*Park gardens. “When you create spaces that encourages the natural world, it arrives. From wildlife to organic growth. It’s therapeutic, healthy, and just good overall.”
