BURTON: DENVER FLAGSHIP AND SHOWROOM
Provided: Full Service Architecture + General Contracting
Location: Denver, CO
Completed: Fall 2020

This existing building is made up of three separate structures ranging from 1904 to 1961, and served many different uses throughout that time and since. Once a factory for the Strasser Candy Company, and recently a woodworking space for Denver Fine Cabinetry, this historic Denver building is now Commercial space including Burton Snowboards flagship store and showroom, designed and build by Tres Birds.

Tres Birds worked with Structural engineer Paul Gallagher of Gebau Engineering on this careful and complicated adaptive re-use project, resulting in a nimble design which preserved the facades and much of the existing (three) structures. The loading dock was wrapped in a glazed enclosure, creating an indoor-outdoor patio. Custom 16-foot-wide sliding doors open the patio to Walnut Street. A second level and roof deck were added to create some additional square footage for a conference space and rooftop views of the city. Windows were replaced and skylights introduced.

The Burton space occupies the north bay of the building. The existing timber structure of this bay remains exposed, and new steel supports were introduced to support loads from the roof deck above. The space has polished concrete floors and wall hung- retail fixtures installed by the Tres Birds team. From the exterior, historic façade elements were preserved including the cornice detailing and the original sign band, which now hosts the sign for Burton Snowboards.
