FJÄLLRÄVEN & ROYAL ROBBINS DENVER
Provided: Full Service Architecture + Interior Design + General Contracting
Location: Denver, CO
Completed: Summer 2020

Sweden-based Fjällräven and California-based Royal Robbins are sister outdoor brands, with distinct but complimentary approaches to experiencing the outdoors. Tres Birds designed and built two connected retail spaces for the brands in Denver.

The Fjällräven space is heavily day-lit, with displays hanging on beetle-kill-pine posts, rather than solid walls, allowing the daylight to spill into the store through the displays, as it would in a forest. Front Range beetle-kill pine ceiling and Colorado Black Granite rocks create a local backdrop for the Swedish-inspired ash furnishings and the brand’s colorful clothing and gear. The “tailor hut” sits in the center of the space, highlighting the brand’s commitment to repair and personalized fitting services. Also built with beetle-kill pine, the tailor hut resembles the proportions of a simple Swedish cabin.

The Royal Robbins brand celebrates a rich heritage in the climbing world, and a hopeful future in adventure travel. The Denver space is the first flagship brick and mortar store for the company and captures the uniqueness of the brand story and its commitment to improving sustainability in outdoor clothing while inspiring travel domestic and abroad. Through materiality, imagery, and furnishings, the design embraces the themes of global travel, sustainable materiality, and nods to the climbing heritage of the brand.

The display fixtures for Royal Robbins were designed and crafted in the Tres Birds workshop. Tables and hanging displays are made from reclaimed boxcar flooring from the Santa Fe Railroad, gun-blued steel, and static climber’s cord. The tilework at the center of the space includes handmade tile from Boulder Colorado as well as hand painted patterned tiles from the southwestern US and Mexico. The brick is reclaimed from old Denver warehouses that have been torn down over the years.
