FREEHILL STUDIO
Provided: Architecture + General Contracting
Location: Boulder, CO
Completed: 2001

This photography studio becomes what the camera is: a light box. Methods of controlling light are built into the studio. With its strategic positioning on the site, aperture location, and material selection, the building allows light to enter the space in any direction. The photographer chooses. The only light deliberately denied are car headlights.

The ephemeral quality of light is offset by the permanency of the building structure. Massive concrete walls are poured deep into the earth like they have been around for eternity. Once inside, visitors find it difficult to leave the enchantment.
