MCNICHOLS BUILDING: BIENNIAL OF THE AMERICAS
Provided: Architecture + General Contracting
Location: Denver, CO
Completed: June 2010

We have opened this 100-year-old civic icon to the sun and the people of Denver once more in preparation for the Biennial of the Americas event that was held in July of 2010. Our process for this project was primarily reductive: tons of steel, lathe, and masonry aggregate were demolished and recycled. The building had a history of bad remodels, covering windows with walls, blocking skylights and the destruction of original volumes. We spent 4 months getting back to the circa 1910 condition of the built structure, limiting our installation only to devices that allow sunlight in. All introduced, functional programming is made of pine beetle kill from our region's dead forest.
