“That which we are all connected to makes all beings common to one another.”

Water and light is what connects each of us. More than connection, it provides nourishment. It’s a universally held truth that sees no differentiation between plants, animals, and humans. Without either, we suffer. It is with this idea that MMM began playing with toy animal figurines at the Sheboygan, Wisconsin county fair.

Setting up a booth, stocking it with paper, markers, and crayons in addition to his toy animals, he asked the visitors about their experiences with native animals in the wild. “Have you ever connected with an animal? Looked it in the eye? Touched it? Had a spiritual moment? How close did you get?”

Winning an artist-in-residency grant at the John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Moore took these concepts and designed a sculpture that would be placed in City Green, the town’s gathering place that sits central in the thriving downtown neighborhood.

P.E.A.R.L. (prism emitting abstract refracted light) is energy-giving. Like a droplet of water, it’s in the shape of an orb. Like a ray of light, its glass panels reflect and emit that which surrounds it. The orb will always be dynamic; the daily and seasonal position of the sun, the movement of the observer, and the humidity in the air each contribute to a phenomenal experience for the viewer.

Built in the Tres Birds workshop, its wooden ribs are made up of locally sourced ash, pine, Douglas fir, mahogany, and poplar. Laminated and pressure fitting the glass panels in place, the ribs offer a grounding support to the continual movement of light. The glass panels are a unique product of the innovation of tbw, providing a prismatic effect that reads differently depending on the angle.

Surrounded by earthwork mounds that are indigenous to the region with paths that weave in and out of the P.E.A.R.L.’s orbit, viewers are encouraged and compelled to interact.
