Location: Boulder, CO
Completed: November 2015

Shambhala Publications is a publishing house centered around the distribution of books for enlightened living. Previously based in Boston, when Shambhala decided to move to Boulder, they contacted Tres Birds to design and build their new home.

With the change in location came the addition of a public bookstore, defining the main feature of the project. Here, every title published in Shambhala’s thirty-five year history is represented, giving visitors immediate contact with the company’s mission and purpose. Built using reclaimed boxcar flooring, the bookshelves exist on a pivot system, providing flexibility and adaptability of space. The shelving uses compression and gravity as a means of construction, eliminating glues and improving the quality of the air.

Integrating an artistic touchpoint, Tres Birds hand designed and painted the welcoming emblem. To the left and in Buddhist tradition, a cubby clad wall encourages guests to place footwear at the door. Throughout the rest of the building, the parameters of the space were expanded by installing glass windows for greater light exposure.
