TODD REED VENICE
Provided: Architecture + General Contracting
Location: Abbot Kinney/ Venice, California
Completed: September 2014

When jewelry designer Todd Reed decided to expand his business with a second showroom in Venice, California, he tapped old friend tres birds workshop to complete the interior space of an existing building on Abott Kinney. This is the third project Todd Reed and Tres Birds have completed together.
Tres Birds created a program throughout that is heavy in security, while preserving lightness of space. Upon entrance, a central display case hangs suspended from the ceiling and guides onlookers in a circular motion, allowing several people to experience viewing privacy at once. To the back of the first floor and separated by a glass wall, is the transparent workshop where jewelry making can be witnessed on site. As visitors ascend, the second floor becomes increasingly intimate. A series of secure pods give sales associates the opportunity to meet more closely with individual clients. High profile visitors enter from the back of the building and are guided to the third floor, where only the most serious jewelry buying takes place.
With the intention of doing more with less and inventing custom solutions for the inherited framework, main interior features address multiple functions. The most prominent feature is the indoor/ outdoor living green wall that dampens sound, softens and brings life to the immediate environment, ionizes the indoor air quality, as well as creates a visual identifier of the Todd Reed brand. The wall extends to the height of the first two floors, while connecting interior and exterior space. A single wooden bench anchors the bottom of the garden wall, where inside and outside visitors alike may find respite. With only a single pane of glass between the two, visitors can physically be on different sides while experiencing a shared interaction.
The suspended central display case on the ground floor serves multiple purposes by providing ultra secure storage, creating a dynamic space, acting as a light fixture at night and adding consistency in design by mimicking the building’s exterior earthquake reinforcement beams. The display cases were created with longevity in mind. Each piece was made by hand using reclaimed boxcar flooring at Tres Birds in Denver. Similarly, each Todd Reed jewelry piece is made in-house, highlighting a rare synthesis with the client. The result is a higher artistic quality of both jewelry and building design + making.
