VISUAL INTEREST
Provided: Architecture + General Contracting
Location: Denver, CO
Completed: February 2015

The Brighton Corridor in Denver is a gold mine for converting existing structures into modern buildings. When lighting manufacturers representatives, Visual Interest, needed a new home and showroom, they found it along North Broadway in an old industrial complex that once housed a printing and publishing operation. The complex is made of three different structures, built at different times. Tres Birds was called in to convert the spaces into an efficient and cohesive interior experience.

Lighting is a central theme in all of Tres Birds’ projects, but in this case, lighting was the center focus in the client’s world as well. The programming was designed to reflect this and upon entrance, visitors are greeted with thousands of light samples. One of the main walls in the entrance area serves as a sample light wall system, where the light from these fixtures can be experienced in the real. Skylights were added for supplying daylight to building inhabitants.

Creating enhanced work flow was another aspect addressed through the programming of the interior space. Often, by the time a company is ready to upgrade their office space, they are experiencing crowded quarters and are in a transition of growth. Previously, all departments overlapped. In this new space, a mezzanine was built in the upper part of the central structure using reclaimed maple boxcar flooring and steel. This area is more removed and was designed for separation, allowing sales representatives space to fully utilize voice and telephone communication.

In order to make room for a mezzanine, a certain level of building surgery was performed. The building was originally built using a bowstring truss system that works with the use of tension. It is a classic design that makes use of minimal resources, provides a beautiful structural/ arched shape and removes the need for posts, important for original industrial and warehouse purposes. One of the intentions in converting the old building was to preserve the original tension system of the ceiling. The bowstring tresses that normally provide the tension were replaced with the steel frame of the mezzanine.

The Visual Interest project reflects a refined process on behalf of Tres Birds. With each new project, where we have the opportunity to convert an old building, we are understanding more ways to create a seamless experience for the building users.
