In 2015, Tres Birds designed and built a home for Shambhala Publications in Boulder, Colorado when they relocated from Boston. See that project here: SHAMBHALA 2015

During the COVID pandemic of 2020-2021, the move to remote work allowed the company to hire remote workers and realize that they could do with less space. Shambhala decided to relocate to a smaller location that could house their library of publications, meeting space, and a smaller number of offices. After choosing a 1900 Victorian house in Boulder, Shambhala reached out again to Tres Birds to help them reimagine their offices in the new space.

In an effort to re-use as much as possible from the existing space, Tres Birds disassembled and altered the custom built-ins from the existing location. Almost nothing was reassembled exactly as it was previous, but parts and pieces were resized to create new built-ins as efficiently as possible. Custom-built tables made from boxcar flooring for the 2015 project were relocated to the new space.

Tres Birds Designed and built a new reception desk from Baltic Birch plywood, and the drops were used to create a bench at the front entry. Behind the reception desk the Shambhala emblem was re-installed on a hidden door leading to an under-stair storage space.

This existing building is made up of three separate structures ranging from 1904 to 1961, and served many different uses throughout that time and since. Once a factory for the Strasser Candy Company, and recently a woodworking space for Denver Fine Cabinetry, this historic Denver building is now Commercial space including Burton Snowboards flagship store and showroom, designed and build by Tres Birds.

Tres Birds worked with Structural engineer Paul Gallagher of Gebau Engineering on this careful and complicated adaptive re-use project, resulting in a nimble design which preserved the facades and much of the existing (three) structures. The loading dock was wrapped in a glazed enclosure, creating an indoor-outdoor patio. Custom 16-foot-wide sliding doors open the patio to Walnut Street. A second level and roof deck were added to create some additional square footage for a conference space and rooftop views of the city. Windows were replaced and skylights introduced.

The Burton space occupies the north bay of the building. The existing timber structure of this bay remains exposed, and new steel supports were introduced to support loads from the roof deck above. The space has polished concrete floors and wall hung- retail fixtures installed by the Tres Birds team. From the exterior, historic façade elements were preserved including the cornice detailing and the original sign band, which now hosts the sign for Burton Snowboards.

As part of the City of Denver’s Game Plan for a Healthy City, Tres Birds, in collaboration with Wenk Associates, has taken on the reprogramming and design of a multi-block stretch of the south Platte river front property between 32nd and 38th streets, dubbed Arkins Promenade. The center of this stretch is anchored by RiNo ArtPark, a Tres Birds reclamation project completed in 2021. North of the Art Park is home to the Elevated Walkway. Designed by Tres Birds, the walkway is a 400-foot-long elevated platform adjacent to the South Platte River, offering views up and down the river corridor and of the surrounding neighborhoods and city beyond.

Designed to reconnect the community to the river corridor after years of industrial activity, the elevated walkway and surrounding park connect the Platte River bike and pedestrian trail to the neighborhood through green, public space, offering opportunities for playing, gathering, strolling, and sitting.

The steel walkway is supported by telephone poles and climbs to a height of 28 feet at its highest point, where it opens to an expansive deck overlooking the river. The wood plank decking, railings and picnic tables are crafted from sustainably sourced lumber that will weather to grey. A spider-web of sturdy netting built into the deck encourages climbing across and lounging above the park. Recycled plastic milk bottles formed into grey blocks have been constructed into benches at the ground plane.

As part of the City of Denver’s Game Plan for a Healthy City, Tres Birds, in collaboration with Wenk Associates, has taken on the reprogramming and design of a multi-block stretch of the south Platte river front property between 32nd and 38th streets. Anchoring the center of this multi-phase project is the new RiNo ArtPark. Designed by Tres Birds, the ArtPark is a cultural hub, responding to programmatic needs of the community and serving to increase access to green space along the riverbank.

The South Platte River has long been an industrial zone in Denver, with little community connection to the river. The existing buildings on this site - previously a group of replete warehouses that were slated for demolition - were instead adapted and re-purposed for new functions. Tres Birds saw potential in the structure of these buildings and proposed a creative solution for reclaiming them for the new cultural center. This design process is what we like to think of as erosion. We removed concrete, asphalt, sewer pipes, and cladding, replacing it with vegetation, daylight, and open space.

The original building occupied the site like an imposing mass. Through partially disassembling and selectively removing the center of the building, leaving the steel k joist framing in-place, the design created two wings flanking a central plaza which now marks the north entrance to the park.

The east wing houses a first-of-its-kind branch of Denver Public Library, an art gallery space and eight affordable artist studios made possible in partnership with RedLine Contemporary Art Center. The library has space for a small collection and collaboration spaces that can serve as conference rooms or maker spaces, as well as storage and private offices. The west wing houses Focus Points Family Resource Center’s café and restaurant, also featuring a large commissary kitchen and food incubator to enable small businesses to prove their concepts before transitioning to more costly commercial kitchens.

These spaces open onto a plaza and enhanced greenspace that connects to the pedestrian and bike path along the Platte. The plaza is home to an extensive public art installation featuring large metal hoppers reclaimed from a neighboring concrete plant. Artists Jaime Molina and Pedro Barrios of The Worst Crew, along with Tres Birds have repurposed the hoppers into sculptures throughout the plaza and park.

“We like to be able to use what’s on the site. It’s a hopeful gesture. Through repurposing and our art practices, we can reduce waste and make meaningful, useful design for our community.” – Mike Moore, Tres Birds.

Provided: Full Service Architecture + Interior Design + General Contracting
Location: Boulder, CO
Completed: Winter 2021

Tres Birds designed and built an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in Boulder, Colorado. The 800 square foot home is efficiently designed, well insulated, and has been designated a “Affordable Accessory Unit” rental property by the City of Boulder Affordable Housing Program.

This small home is made primarily of reclaimed bowling alley lanes and plywood. The 50 year old bowling alley wood is used as a structurally independent mezzanine floor system. Reject tile from a Boulder artisan is used throughout the bathroom and in the kitchen. The skylight is made from a dichroic glass panel that was a rejected stock from a past Tres Birds project. As the angle of the sun changes throughout the day and season, so do the light/color effects within the living space, creating a vibrant show of colored light throughout. Window locations and roof overhangs were designed specifically to maximize natural light in the home while providing adequate shading for summer sun. In the winter, the continuous standing seam exterior is designed to be low maintenance and to quickly shed snow with its 12:12 roof pitch.

The ADU scores well for energy efficiency. The envelope is tight and well insulated. Radiant floor heating and cooling keep the climate comfortable. Lighting, security, HVAC, and the operable skylight can all be controlled by the occupant’s phone, cutting down on energy waste. The home received a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score of 33, not far off from Europe’s stringent Passive House requirement of HERS 20. For reference, a new standard home scores HERS 100 and an Energy Smart home scores HERS 85.

Happy Camper is a Chicago based restaurant and bar known for its exceptional food and ambiance. They reached out to Tres Birds to design and build their first location in Denver at an existing building in Denver's Highlands neighborhood.

The existing building featured some re-useable structure but presented a real problem in terms of siting. The building was located in the back of the site with a parking layout that did nothing to take advantage of its prominent location on an active corner.

Tres Birds was able to remedy this problem with a creative parking reduction that allowed the exterior seating area to push all the way out to the corner of the site. We used gabion walls as fence and retaining elements to break up the space and manage the grade. Ultimately, we were able to create an active exterior dining space to replace the unused parking lot that had previously occupied the corner. Grade changes, steel and timber overhead elements, concrete culverts, and landscaping all serve to break this large exterior space into smaller, distinct niches; each with their own character.

That concept continues to the interior of the building as well. Massive overhead doors allow the bar to completely open; creating a real connection with the exterior dining space. As in the exterior spaces, changes in overhead heights and finishes create distinct niches within the larger dining room. The end result is a space that can feel intimate despite being large and cohesive despite being varied.

Completed in June 2020, this reclamation project took a dark, cloistered office building with narrow and convoluted circulation, and turned it into a daylit, energy efficient, flexible, and healthy office space for a 3D design software firm in Boulder, Colorado.

Tres Birds selectively removed exterior and interior walls to create transparency, views, and a clear sense of circulation through the building. Skylights, glass walls, and a new atrium opening allow the sun to penetrate deep or entirely through the building. In many locations the user receives sunlight from 3 or 4 directions simultaneously, creating a happier, healthier workspace for the building’s occupants.

Triangulation plays a vital role in 3D design software as well as in architecture, form, and structure. The triangle is present and plays a role in all levels of the building design, from daylighting to building form to interior design choices. A folding glass curtain wall inserted into the existing brick façade, dubbed the Prism Plane, is made from clear and dichroic colored glass. The colorful panes reflect and refract color through and around the building and change with the time of day as well as the angle of the viewer. Each panel is placed at a unique angle to increase the kaleidoscopic effects of the glass, their very complexity a reminder of the software used to shape the design. As a 38’ steel hydraulic door pivots upwards, more reflections and refractions interact with the ground and the curtain wall above. Every day of the year provides a new radiant color show inside and out.

The renovations included improvements in energy use as well. A 60kW photovoltaic array was installed on the roof, windows were upgraded to double pane low-e IGUs, and low flow Kohler plumbing fixtures were installed. The use of LED lighting with full dimming control zones allows the use of artificial lighting only where necessary at any point during the day.

As architects and general contractors, Tres Birds took a stuffy, hermetic, brick office building and pushed as much sunlight as possible into its core. Occupants who enjoy this natural lighting will feel better and work healthier. With the Prism Plane as a backdrop, the outdoor garden has become an indoor/outdoor workspace allowing employees to take advantage of Boulder's gentle weather and work in an inspiring environment. Balancing transparency with privacy, the building now allows for clear navigation and comfort while maintaining a variety of efficient workspace.

Sweden-based Fjällräven and California-based Royal Robbins are sister outdoor brands, with distinct but complimentary approaches to experiencing the outdoors. Tres Birds designed and built two connected retail spaces for the brands in Denver.

The Fjällräven space is heavily day-lit, with displays hanging on beetle-kill-pine posts, rather than solid walls, allowing the daylight to spill into the store through the displays, as it would in a forest. Front Range beetle-kill pine ceiling and Colorado Black Granite rocks create a local backdrop for the Swedish-inspired ash furnishings and the brand’s colorful clothing and gear. The “tailor hut” sits in the center of the space, highlighting the brand’s commitment to repair and personalized fitting services. Also built with beetle-kill pine, the tailor hut resembles the proportions of a simple Swedish cabin.

The Royal Robbins brand celebrates a rich heritage in the climbing world, and a hopeful future in adventure travel. The Denver space is the first flagship brick and mortar store for the company and captures the uniqueness of the brand story and its commitment to improving sustainability in outdoor clothing while inspiring travel domestic and abroad. Through materiality, imagery, and furnishings, the design embraces the themes of global travel, sustainable materiality, and nods to the climbing heritage of the brand.

The display fixtures for Royal Robbins were designed and crafted in the Tres Birds workshop. Tables and hanging displays are made from reclaimed boxcar flooring from the Santa Fe Railroad, gun-blued steel, and static climber’s cord. The tilework at the center of the space includes handmade tile from Boulder Colorado as well as hand painted patterned tiles from the southwestern US and Mexico. The brick is reclaimed from old Denver warehouses that have been torn down over the years.

La Veleta, or the Weathervane, is a 36-foot tall mosaic tile totem pole, commissioned by the City of Denver’s Public Art Program. Denver Artist Jaime Molina and Tres Birds collaborated to design, build, and install the 36-foot tall mosaic totem pole in Barnum Park, Denver.
Jaime provided the concept behind the artwork, animal design, and carefully tiled each animal head in house at the Tres Birds workshop. The seven mosaic animal heads were chosen from animals native to Colorado- buffalo, snake, mountain lion, fox, ram, owl, and the bear.

“These animals represent the diverse cultures and people of Colorado and all of the histories that come with them. Despite the brutal nature of predators and prey, these native creatures live in harmony with each other coexisting within a bigger ecosystem where everything stays in balance…This totem pole serves as a gauge of our ability to survive ourselves. I think of it as a reminder of which way the wind is blowing.”- Jaime Molina

Tres Birds designed and fabricated the totem, engineered its structural system, material integration, managed the site work and installation for the project. Material and structural detailing were key to providing a solid and long-lasting canvas for Jaime to work with. The use of waterproof epoxy-based grout, polystyrene formwork, and a steel structural system that places no stress on the tile work, was all designed by Tres Birds to ensure this sculpture lasts hundreds of years. Tres Birds installation of the heads took from dawn to dusk on December 14th.

“Collaborating on the creation of these animal beings in our workshop has had a deep impact on me. I have loved coming to work every day and seeing these animal spirits come alive. We built this totem to last for at least 7 generations for Denver’s people” - Michael M. Moore
Nestled in one of the country’s epicenters of craft beer, First Draft is a new restaurant concept that allows visitors to sample flavors from all over the country, while pouring their own. Engaging people in the process of the pour, patrons of First Draft essentially get to create their own tasting room experience. Pretty sweet.

Tres Birds completed the build out, installing a full commercial kitchen, auto beer and refrigeration system as well as the interior tables and surfaces. 2601 Larimer was finished in the fall of 2014, creating space for new businesses to populate and grow the RiNo neighborhood, including Sushi-Rama, Haven and Kit and Ace.
